How It Works

Solar charges your battery. Your battery powers your home.

Solar Panels DC electricity Battery Stores energy Your Home Powers everything Grid Net metering credits

Solar panels charge the battery during the day. The battery powers your home at night or during outages. Excess energy goes to the grid for credits. When the battery is low, your home pulls from the grid as backup.

Start with the loads

What needs to stay on when the grid goes down?

Start with a refrigerator, lights and internet, then decide whether you also need a well pump, central AC or other large loads. That list determines the power and stored energy your backup system needs.

A grid-tied solar array usually shuts down when utility power fails. Backup requires compatible equipment that safely separates the home from the grid and supports solar operation during the outage. Adding a battery alone does not establish that capability.

kW is power: what can run at the same time. kWh is stored energy: how long those loads can run. A system needs enough of both.

Runtime example

How long will a home battery last?

Suppose a 13.5 kWh battery is full and you leave 20% unused in this example. That leaves 10.8 kWh. Divide it by the average backed-up load:

Average loadCalculationIdeal runtime
0.5 kW10.8 ÷ 0.521.6 hours
1 kW10.8 ÷ 110.8 hours
3 kW10.8 ÷ 33.6 hours

These are illustrative constant loads, not measured appliance packages. The calculation excludes solar recharge and does not deduct operating losses, temperature effects or aging. Reserve behavior varies by system and settings; 20% is an example assumption, not a required outage reserve.

Central AC, electric heat and EV charging can change runtime sharply. We review starting loads as well as average demand. For medical equipment that cannot tolerate an interruption, follow its dedicated backup requirements.

Equipment

Compare the complete battery system

EG4 WallMount All Weather home battery
  • 14.3 kWh per 280Ah battery
  • Separate compatible inverter required
  • Output depends on the complete system
  • Indoor/outdoor model; location rules apply

This battery needs a separate inverter. Your quote should name both models and the equipment needed to switch your home to backup power.

Tesla Powerwall 3 home battery
  • 13.5 kWh per battery
  • Up to 11.5 kW continuous AC output
  • Integrated solar inverter
  • 10-year limited battery warranty

The built-in solar inverter accepts panels directly. Output settings and battery count must support the appliances you want to run and for how long.

FranklinWH aPower S home battery
  • 15 kWh per battery
  • 10 kW battery-only; up to 11.5 kW with solar
  • Integrated solar inverter
  • 15-year limited warranty; throughput terms apply

Solar panels connect directly to the built-in inverter. Generator charging needs compatible equipment; include aGate and the required modules in your quote.

For new solar plus storage, compare Powerwall 3 vs FranklinWH aPower S, which both include direct solar input. Already have solar? FranklinWH aPower 2 is a separate AC-coupled option to review alongside your existing solar inverter. If you are weighing backup sources, review battery vs generator backup in Oklahoma. For another design path, review EG4 vs Tesla Powerwall or our off-grid solar service.

Plan the electrical panel with the battery

This Amber installation pairs a SPAN smart electrical panel with a Powerwall 3. Circuit management belongs in the backup conversation alongside battery capacity.

Whole-home connection does not mean every appliance can run at once. Decide which loads can pause during an outage and which need dedicated coverage.

Your installation scope

What we review before quoting battery backup

Existing solar and electrical equipment

Inverter model, main-panel rating, available space, wiring route and the equipment needed to disconnect safely from the utility.

Essential or whole-home coverage

Named circuits, AC and pump starting loads, expected average demand, battery quantity and any load controls.

Charging through a longer outage

Solar recharge assumptions and, if requested, generator compatibility, transfer equipment and operating sequence.

Installed cost and completion

Battery and controls, mounting and electrical work, permits, utility requirements, commissioning, app setup and written workmanship terms.

Installation timing follows the site review and approval requirements. Keep backup value separate from bill savings: charging costs, losses and your utility tariff affect the economics. Check the Oklahoma utility-rate guide when reviewing a savings model.

Build a backup plan around your home

Send your utility bill, solar inverter model if you have one, electrical-panel photos and a list of the equipment you want to keep running.

Battery storage FAQ

Can I install a battery without solar panels?
Yes, a battery system designed for grid charging can store utility power for an outage. Once that energy runs out, it needs an available charging source. Compare backup value separately from bill savings, which depend on your tariff, charging cost and operating losses.
Can a battery run my central air conditioner?
Possibly. We check compressor starting current, running power and the other circuits you want online at the same time. Starting an AC unit and running it overnight are different requirements. Battery count and load controls follow that review.
Can I add a battery to solar I already own?
Often, but compatibility needs a site review. Send the solar inverter model, electrical-panel photos, monitoring access and any existing system drawings. We check what equipment can stay, how the array will operate during an outage and whether panel or wiring changes are needed.
How much does installed battery backup cost?
The price depends on battery count, gateway or transfer equipment, backed-up circuits, wiring distance, permits and electrical changes. Ask for an itemized installed cash price and a separate financing comparison. A battery-only price cannot establish the cost of a working backup system for your home.
Where can the battery be installed?
Location depends on the exact model, required clearances, temperature limits, electrical layout and local code. We review garage or exterior locations during design. Keep the installed clearances open and follow the equipment maintenance instructions.
Will solar recharge the battery during an outage?
A compatible system designed for off-grid operation can recharge from solar while supplying backed-up loads. Clouds, snow, shading and household use can leave too little energy to refill it. A multi-day plan needs a daily energy estimate and an allowance for poor solar production.
